Today there are a large amount of light bulbs available in different shapes, sizes, and colors, such as incandescent
bulbs, halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) and fluorescent bulbs
Power ratings range from about 0,1 watt to about 10 000 watts and more
Watts are standard units of measure in electricity. One watt is equal to 1/746 horsepower
Incandescent light bulbs are also called incandescent lamps. They consist of a glass enclosure
(the envelope or bulb)
Inside the bulb is a filament of tungsten wire. The filament connects two metal rods that extend upwards into the
chambers from contacts at the base of the bulb. An electric current is passed through, exiting atoms in the
tungsten filament, photons (light particles) are generated
The filament appears to be about 1 or 2cm long, but it actually contains about 1 meter (3ft) of fine tungsten wire.
Tungsten is used because it can withstand high temperatures before melting. The filament typically reaches
about 2500 degrees Celsius
During manufacture air is pumped out of the bulb and replaced with inert gasses such as argon.
Inert gases help to extend the life of the filament
Incandescent bulbs come in a variety of colors such as clear for brilliant light, soft white for a softer mood,
yellow for bugs, light blue to filter out yellow, black for special effects and amber replicating light from a
natural gas flame

Halogen bulbs use same technology and filament as incandescent to produce light, but last up to three
times longer. Halogen bulbs produce pure bright light
Fluorescent bulbs or tubes are filled with mercury vapor that emit ultraviolet light when electricity
is applied. Fluorescents are not only linear but also come circular or u-shaped. Grow lights are fluorescent bulbs
specifically made to provide indoor light to indoor plants. Some fluorescents are specifically made for
aquarium tanks
Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) are the most energy efficient light bulbs. They use less wattage than
incandescent, last up to sixteen times longer, however do not handle power surges as well. Great for
dimmable and 3 way
